APEX is a specialized Engine Consulting firm based out of New Richmond WI.  We provide customized, innovative engineering solutions through customer focused strategies. With over 50 years’ experience working with private entrepreneurs, industrial giants, and military contractors, our engineers have acquired unique skill sets advancing our capabilities beyond the foreseeable future.  With an advanced understanding of propulsion engineering, thermodynamics, heat transfer, material science, torsional vibration, physics and production methods, we aim to offer unique perspectives in the industry.

Steve Weinzierl
Managing Partner

Steve Weinzierl is a Managing Partner of APEX, and a driving force for the creation of our powertrain consultancy. He was raised in Ely, Minnesota where he developed an early passion for business, aviation, racing, and all vehicle engines. Steve studied mechanical engineering at North Dakota State University, where he completed a bachelors and a master’s degree. Steve has been involved in several notable engine projects that have gone into series production. Although involved in all aspects of engine design, Steve has developed specific expertise in the study of driveline torsional vibrations, high-speed gearing, and thermodynamics. He serves as APEX Vice President, and acts as the Primary Project Manager and Point-of-Contact for our US customers. Steve has a passion for aviation, holding both land and sea ratings.

Oliver Schneider
Managing Partner

Oliver Schneider is a Managing Partner of APEX, and leads the Technical Teams as Engineering Manager. Oliver has worked with Steven for 17 years. He holds an automotive engineering degree and is specialized in internal combustion engine design. In his career, he has been in charge of the development of many different engine components such as cylinder heads, crankcases, turbine manifolds, as well as crankshafts and torsional vibration absorbers, to name but a few. Oliver combines this experience with his remarkable creativity to conceptualize sophisticated design solutions and realize functional components.

By working with our clients, we establish a base of knowledge and understanding of what their needs are and a history of what has been done. Once goals have been established, our team concentrates on engineering solutions that will meet project objectives. We offer multiple solutions in early stages, allowing our customers to select those which best fit their needs. Our experience offers unique opportunities for our customers as we have a substantial rolodex of vetted contacts and potential suppliers, to ensure our designs can be produced within the facilities our customers may choose as their partners.  Critical timelines are an essential part of production.  During procurement, we serve as a liaison ensuring constant communication in all phases until parts are delivered.  We introduce our customers to a series of rapid production methods ensuring a well-established and manufactured design.

Component optimization is an important part of meeting design objectives.  Our team uses advanced analysis tools to tailor the level of analysis to match part criticality.  We use a variety of materials and/or heat treatment processes which in turn enhance our designs.  Analytical tools are used for structural, kinematic, thermal, thermodynamic, and fluid flow analysis. We work with industry experts, when necessary, to ensure software is utilized by those that use it on a regular basis. Analysis may contemplate mechanical performance, weight, or feasibility for production (cost).

A vital piece of any design is ensuring that the parts meet all specified requirements detailed in the drawings used to support manufacturing.  We emphasize this aspect so that when we test a new Proof-of-Concept design, we have clear expectations.  We work with the part manufacturers to ensure we meet their limitations for a cost-effective and successful execution. Prior to testing a prototype part, we track the data necessary to understand what was delivered.  We verify materials, heat treat process, dimensions, and post operations. Our experience has shown these steps to be necessary when forensic evaluation is required.

Project management is a fundamental piece of the scope of service we provide to our clients.  Along with connecting our customers with experts who have the experience and knowledge that can help bring projects to fruition, we also assist with vetting supplier selection.  The suppliers we work with operate to expedite delivery to keep projects on schedule.  When rapid delivery is primary, we leverage the relationships we have developed over decades of experiences with those that operate in high-end racing venues to deliver the highest quality parts.
